After completing online session one and all of the homework, please return to this post and answer the Essential Question for Session One by posting a comment to this blog entry.
"What is the relationship between learning style and the 4MAT Cycle?"
After session one, and this week's reading, I actually had a clarifying question around what the true answer for this essential question is.
ReplyDeleteIs it that we all must go through the entire cycle of learning in order to truly learn something, but we may begin at different points in the cycle (from a question of "why", or "how"..etc.)?
OR
Do we all begin in the same place in the cycle (12 O'clock - in the "feeling" about something) and then have a preferred quadrant as we continue to move along the cycle?
I am looking forward to learning more and gaining more understanding in our next session.
My take on the relationship between the 4MAT cycle and an individual's learning style is that the cycle is a visual representation of the learning process that all go through. It is a way of compartmentalizing the different ways we each experience that cycle, however, in that we start in different places and end in different places. My understanding is that we all go through each step, but jump in at the place that is within our comfort zone, after which we go through the rest of the cycle in order.

ReplyDeleteMy answer to the question about the relationship to the Cycle and the dominant learning type - My understanding is that the dominant learning type is the comfortable, priority place on which a person prefers to begin learning. The task of the work is to build up the other three areas and not to dwell in the comfort zone in order to keep moving around the spiral of learning most completely.
In reply to Brooke - I had the same question about where the feeling begins. Does it begin for everyone at 12 o'clock? Or, for me for example, does it start at 6:00 as I am a type 3 learner?
ReplyDeleteIn response to the original question, I believe the relationship between the Learning Cycle and an individual's learning style is where one's learning begins. While everyone needs to go through each style and essential question in order to complete the learning process - an individual has to approach learning from their own style or area of comfort. As we mature, or become more self aware, we begin to be more comfortable accessing other styles more freely.
[editorial comment... I am struggling with answering this question because I am so literal and we don't have the slides from the session and the video link isn't working. I think this is very Type 2/3 of me to want to get the correct answer based the facts. I need data so I can ask "What?" and "How does this work?"]
ReplyDeleteI believe the relationship between the learning style and the 4MAT cycle is that a person spends more time in their "quadrant" while learning. It is where they are the most comfortable. All learning requires Feeling, Reflecting, Thinking and Acting but our brains are wired for one (or two) more than the others.
